Chipping away the rights of the Disabled is slowly gaining momentum. Ever so excruciatingly, tiny little sections of laws created for our protection are being whittled away. We're such easy targets, right?
I think the fact that I'm just hearing about this at night means that the line of this particular law was erased from it at night, meaning in secret so there wouldn't be an uproar. Ladies and gentleman, this can't happen! Not in any way. If people with a disability are slowly being counted as less than human anyone else could be next. Indeed, there are no limits to the depths our society could sink to in order to maintain a certain "kind" of society.
Right now it's just a certain segment of the population-- one that often struggles to be seen. At the moment, the Powers that Be in government are just skirting eugenics. But f they can say that going out in public is not allowed, then turn around and end in-home services, they are telling those with disabilities that they are not welcome among the living. And this could expand with the greatest of ease.
Soon it could be more than just disabled people of a certain age, but also people with a disability below a certain income level. Services costing the government money, relied upon by millions for their very life or dignity-- are already being cut. What's to stop anybody from narrowing the margin of eligibility for the diminishing programs that remain, so that after a certain point the Disabled and those who love and care for them have no choice but to commit them to permanent hospitalization-- if they can even afford it?
So many individuals with a disability live by necessity far below the poverty line. Paying for permanent institutionalization and all the costs associated would be devastating. And yet the alternative is so very much darker. Unfortunately from where I'm sitting some people will have to face a choice like this in the future. the wheels of injustice are spinning:(
